A Change of Mind: An Alzheimer's Portrait, 2003

My father's spirit left him, in a sense, when he contracted Alzheimer's disease. It did not happen overnight, as this is a slow process. First, there are some lapses, such as not being able to find the way home from some place, when driving. Next, there is a struggle to construct normal sentences. Finally, there is no talking, just staring ahead at a book that isn't being read. My mother was a great caretaker and wife who did not abandon my father in this horrible adventure. They were married for 59 years when my father passed away on April 17, 1999. After a few months, I asked my mother how she felt. She answered: "Relieved."
